Postsecondary Training vs Apprenticeship Training - what is the difference?
Postsecondary Training
- Under the Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security (MCURES)
- Student driven – apply to program of choice at a Designated Learning Institute (DLI)
- # of seats based on institution decision
- Can add any program as long as it is submitted to MCURES for approval
- Tuition rates are paid by student and set based on institution and program and grants are set by MCURES
- Program standards set by several bodies (i.e. OCQAS, PEQAB etc)
- Primarily in class training but could include placements
Apprenticeship Training
- Under the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD)
- Employer driven – hires apprentice and sends them for training with an approved Training Delivery Agent (TDA)
- # of seats based on Ministry demand assessment
- New apprenticeship offerings are limited by MLITSD and allows other TDAs to object
- TDAs are funded by MLITSD based on pre-established $/seat based on the trade
- Program standards set through Skilled Trades Ontario
- Combination of on the job and in class training
