Postsecondary Training vs Apprenticeship Training - what is the difference?

Postsecondary Training

  • Under the Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security (MCURES)
  • Student driven – apply to program of choice at a Designated Learning Institute (DLI)
  • # of seats based on institution decision
  • Can add any program as long as it is submitted to MCURES for approval
  • Tuition rates are paid by student and set based on institution and program and grants are set by MCURES
  • Program standards set by several bodies (i.e. OCQAS, PEQAB etc)
  • Primarily in class training but could include placements

Apprenticeship Training

  • Under the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD)
  • Employer driven – hires apprentice and sends them for training with an approved Training Delivery Agent (TDA)
  • # of seats based on Ministry demand assessment
  • New apprenticeship offerings are limited by MLITSD and allows other TDAs to object
  • TDAs are funded by MLITSD based on pre-established $/seat based on the trade
  • Program standards set through Skilled Trades Ontario
  • Combination of on the job and in class training
